Shopify POS

Listify runs inside the Shopify POS app, so a gift bought in your shop counts on the registry exactly like one bought online. The registrant gets the same email, the item ticks off the same list, and nobody has to remember to reconcile anything afterwards.

There are three things your staff can do at the counter.

At the tillWhat it is for
Find a registryA guest walks in with a gift. Staff find the registry, tag the items, and take payment as normal.
Add a line to a registryOne item in a mixed basket is a gift and the rest is not.
Buy for a registry from a productA guest puts something on the counter and nobody knows whose list it belongs to.

Before you start

  • Shopify POS, on iOS or Android, signed in at the location you are selling from.
  • A Pro plan. In-store registry operations are a Pro feature.
  • Staff signed in as a full staff member. Somebody using a POS PIN only cannot open Listify at the till: POS will not issue an app the credentials it needs. This is a Shopify rule, not ours, and it applies to every app on the smart grid.
  • The Listify app installed on the store, as normal.

There is nothing to pair, authorise or connect. Once the app is installed, the tile is available to add.

Add the tile to your POS home screen

The Listify tile does not appear on its own. Somebody has to put it on the smart grid, which is the tile layout on the POS home screen. You only need to do this once.

From your Shopify admin (the quickest way, and it applies to every device at once):

If you have Listify open, Settings → In-store registry has an Open the POS smart grid editor button that drops you straight at step 3. Otherwise, navigate there yourself:

  1. Go to Sales channels → Point of Sale.
  2. Under Customize the in-store experience, click Edit for POS app.
  3. In the Smart grid section, choose the smart grid template you want the tile on.
  4. On the page you want it on, click ⊕ Add tile.
  5. Click Embedded Apps, then choose Listify gift registry.
  6. Click Save.

Or on the device itself, open Shopify POS, scroll to the bottom of the smart grid, tap Add tile, and pick the app from the list.

The tile reads Gift registry / Find a registry. Put it somewhere your staff will actually see it: the smart grid scrolls, and a tile below the fold gets forgotten.

Want to see the screens before you set anything up? What it looks like walks through all of them.

Selling a gift at the till

This is the main flow, and it takes about fifteen seconds.

  1. Ring the items up as normal. Scan or add everything the customer is buying, gifts and non-gifts together.
  2. Tap the Gift registry tile.
  3. Find the registry. Type at least three letters of the registrant's name or the event name and results appear as you type. If the guest has the registry open on their phone, tap Scan and scan the QR code instead, which is faster and avoids spelling.
  4. Tap the registry to open it. You will see the couple's name, the event date, and what they still need.
  5. Tap the add button, which names the count: Add 1 matching line, Add 3 matching lines. Listify tags only the items in the basket that are actually on that registry. A coffee the customer is buying for themselves is left alone.
  6. Take payment as normal.

That last point is worth repeating: there is no separate step to record the gift. Tagging the lines is the whole job. The moment the sale completes, the purchase lands on the registry.

When only one item is a gift

If the basket is mixed and the automatic match is not what you want, tag the line by hand.

  1. Tap the line in the cart.
  2. Tap Add to a gift registry.
  3. Find the registry and tap it.

Staff can attach any line this way, including one that is not on the registry at all, which covers the guest who buys something off-list as a gift anyway. A line already attached to a different registry is never overwritten automatically. You will see Another registry on it, and you can change it by hand if that is wrong.

After the sale

On the receipt screen, Listify shows a Gift registry panel listing what was recorded against the registry, such as 2 items were added to Sam's Wedding.

If it says nothing is recorded yet, that is normal and not an error. Shopify tells us about the sale a moment after it completes, so the panel sometimes gets there first. The registry updates on its own within a few seconds.

Starting from the product instead of the name

A guest puts something on the counter and nobody knows whose list it belongs to. You can answer that from the product itself, without knowing a name at all.

  1. Open the product in POS, either by scanning it or by searching.
  2. Tap Buy for a gift registry.
  3. Listify lists every registry in your shop that has that item on its list. If there are several, narrow them by the registrant's name or the event.
  4. Tap the registry. The item goes into the sale already tagged to it, and Listify closes back to the till.

If nothing in your shop wants the item, Listify says so plainly and offers Search by name instead. That path does the same thing: the item goes into the sale tagged to whichever registry you pick. Buying something off the list as a gift is an ordinary case, and it lands on the registrant's orders like any other gift.

Listify at the till is for buying from a registry, never for building one. If you want shoppers to start a registry in your shop, that works differently and does not use POS at all: the shopper scans a printed QR code with their own phone and adds items as they walk the aisles. A shop has a handful of devices and hundreds of shoppers, which is why the two are separate.

What gets recorded

Every till sale attributed to a registry is recorded with:

  • The registry it belongs to. The order line carries a visible 🎁 Gift Registry property showing the registry name, so it appears on the order in your admin. This is the identical label used for gifts bought online, so you can filter on one thing rather than two.
  • The shop and location it was sold at, so in-store and online sales can be told apart in your reporting.
  • Who served the customer, when a staff member is pinned in on the device.

The registrant is emailed the same purchase notification they would get from an online order, following the same notification settings. That email is sent from Listify a moment after the sale, so the panel at the till does not wait for it or report on it.

A note on staff attribution

Listify records the pinned staff member, meaning whoever is signed in to serve the customer, not whoever last signed the device in. On a shared shop-floor iPad those are frequently different people.

Listify deliberately does not touch Shopify's own line-item staff attribution, which is what your commission and sales reporting run on. Tagging a gift registry will never change who a sale is credited to.

Troubleshooting

The tile is not on the home screen. It has to be added per location, and the smart grid is per device layout. Follow the steps above on that device. If Listify gift registry does not appear in the app list, check that the app is installed on the store.

Staff tap the tile and nothing loads. Almost always a PIN-only sign-in. Ask them to sign in as a full staff member and try again.

Searching returns nothing. Search needs at least three letters, and it matches the registrant's name, a partner's name, or the event name. If two registrants have the same name, the results show a masked email to tell them apart. Try a surname on its own first.

The registry did not update after a sale. Check the order in your Shopify admin and look for the 🎁 Gift Registry property on the line. If it is there, the tag was written and the registry will catch up. If it is not, the line was never tagged, which usually means the sale was completed before the add button was tapped. You can attribute the order by hand from the registry in your Listify admin.

A gift was recorded against the wrong registry. Open the registry in your Listify admin and remove the attribution there. Re-tagging at the till only affects future sales, not one already completed.
