Duplicate Gift Protection

A registrant who asked for one of something should receive one. Listify checks what is still needed at the moments a guest commits to a gift, so two guests do not end up buying the same item. Part of this is always on. A stronger checkout rule is optional and switched on from your settings.

Always on

These checks run on every store, with no setting to turn on.

  1. When a guest adds a gift to their cart. Listify reads the registry's current numbers at that moment, not the ones from when the page opened. If the gift has been fully purchased in the meantime, it is not added and the guest sees "Someone just gifted this one". If the gift is already in their cart as many times as it is still needed, they are told that too.
  2. When a guest clicks checkout in the Listify cart tray. Listify checks the whole cart again. If any gift is no longer needed, checkout pauses and a dialog names those gifts, with one button that removes them or lowers them to the number still needed. If the guest closes the dialog instead, the tray keeps a short notice with the same Remove and Reduce actions, and they continue once the cart fits.
  3. On your theme's own checkout buttons, when Settings > Cart & checkout > Watch my theme's checkout buttons is on. The same check runs before checkout and the same dialog appears. Its button removes the gifts from the cart and takes the guest back to the registry to pick something else.

Listify never changes a guest's cart by itself at checkout. The guest decides what to remove, and can pick a different gift from the registry instead.

Optional: Duplicate gifts at checkout

The checks above happen in your storefront, before checkout. Some paths into checkout skip them: a link in an abandoned-checkout email, an express payment button, or a guest who opened checkout earlier and pays later.

Turn on Block duplicate gifts at checkout under Settings > Cart & checkout > Duplicate gifts at checkout and save to cover those too. Shopify checkout itself then refuses a registry gift once it is fully purchased, and names the gift so the guest can remove it.

  • One-time permission. The first time you save with it on, Shopify asks you to let Listify add a checkout rule to your store.
  • Works on every Shopify plan. It is a checkout rule, not a change to how checkout looks.
  • Fails open. If the check itself cannot run, Shopify lets the checkout continue rather than stopping every sale.
  • Takes a moment to catch up. Right after you switch it on, Listify records which gifts are already fully purchased. On a store with many registries this can take a few minutes.
  • Also visible in Shopify. The rule appears in your Shopify admin under Settings > Checkout with your other checkout rules. If it is switched off there, the Listify setting shows a warning with a button to turn it back on. If it is switched on there while the Listify setting is off, the warning lets you either turn the setting on or switch the rule off, so the rule never works from out-of-date information. If Listify loses its permission (for example after you reinstall the app), the setting shows a warning with a button to grant it again.

What is not affected

  • Shopify POS. Staff in your store can still sell an additional unit of a gift. Shopify does not run checkout rules on POS sales.
  • Open quantity items. Items without a set quantity are never blocked, however many are bought.
  • Gifts already over-purchased. Nothing that was bought before is cancelled or changed.

Limits

  • Paying at the same moment. If two guests pay for the last needed unit at nearly the same moment, in rare cases both orders can go through.
  • Theme checkout buttons without the Listify checks. If your store does not use the Listify cart tray and does not watch your theme's checkout buttons, checkout from your theme cart is only checked when the optional checkout rule is on. Even with watching on, some carts reach checkout without the click check, for example when the registry has no delivery address or store pickup set. The optional checkout rule is the one layer that covers every path into checkout.

For the other Shopify limits that apply to gift checkout, see Checkout & Delivery.
